Bluestone Sunshields are tested according to the American National Standards Institute. This is a voluntary set of technical regulations that we adhere to ensure our products meet the standards in safety and protection. These tests are complete by a 3rd party lab as well as we frequently do in-house testing to demonstrate how our products work. Below is the set of testing that are done under the ANSI z80 standards which ensure our shields allow for the correct amount of light and visibility required for non-prescription sunglasses.
  • What is UPF50+?
Ultraviolet Protection Factor (UPF) indicates how much UV radiation (both UVB and UVA) a material allows to reach your skin. For example, a UPF 50 fabric blocks 98 percent of the sun's rays and allows two percent (1/50th) to penetrate, thus reducing your exposure risk significantly.

  • Do I need to wear sunscreen with my Bluestone Sunshield?
Wearing Bluestone Sunshields offer the same amount of protection as an SPF 50+ sunscreen. There maybe areas however that are not covered by the sunshield (ie. ears or neck) so we will recommend paring with a sunscreen or our Bluestone Sunscarf if you are looking for a chemical free option.
  • Do all Bluestone Sunshields have the same protection?
All Bluestone Sunshields block a minimum of 99.0% UVA / UVB / UVC rays. Bluestone Sunshields start with the same processes of mixing our UV filtering material into the lens. The processes allows for 99.0% UV rays to blocked. For our Clear Lux Shield after this step the lens would then go into production. Anything with a tint or color treatment have a few extra steps which also add additional blocking capabilities. Our Black Lux Shields have UV Blocking + Tint which allows for closer to 99.5% and our Colored Shields (Rainbow, Chrome, Mermaid) have Color Treatment + UV Blocking + Tint which allows for closer to 99.9% UV Blocking.
  • How do I clean my Bluestone Sunshield?
The reflective finish on Bluestone Sunshields will easily show oils and finger prints so keep you shield looking fresh by using our 3pc Cleaning Kit which includes Bluestone Cleaning Spray, Cleaning Cloth and it's all available in the Bluestone Carrying Kit. No kit? No problem! Use a lens cleaner and soft cloth that you have at home. We always recommend testing a small area first.
  • If the color finish rubs off does it still block UV rays?
Yes! We mix our UV blocking material into the lens rather than it being a spray on top so even if the color wears over time you are still getting great coverage.
  • How can I make the headband larger or smaller?
Adjust the size of your Bluestone Sunshield headband by applying a bit of heat by way of a hairdryer. This will warm up the insert inside the sleeve and allow you to make it larger or smaller.
